UN Body Gives Unexpected Response After Seeing IKN Conditions Firsthand

The development progress of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) has drawn attention from the international community. Representatives from the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), the UN body responsible for safety and security aspects, conducted a direct inspection of the Central Government Core Area (KIPP) of Nusantara and gave a positive assessment of the ongoing progress.

The visit took place on 13 April 2026. The UNDSS delegation, led by Security Adviser and Representative of UNDSS to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Allan Mendoza, was received by Head of the IKN Authority Basuki Hadimuljono and his staff to observe the development progress in the new capital area.

Following the inspection, UNDSS expressed interest in the progress of IKN’s development. The UN agency even opened up the possibility for more international representatives to visit Nusantara in the future.

‘We are interested in the various developments taking place in Nusantara Capital City. One of the backgrounds for our visit is to follow up on a survey conducted by the diplomatic community last year,’ said Allan.

He assessed that the IKN Authority is very open to the international community, including the UN. ‘And it turns out the IKN Authority is very open to the UN on this matter, we will convey this news. The hope is that our other representatives can also visit here in the future,’ he continued.

UNDSS is part of the UN Secretariat responsible for coordinating safety and security aspects for all UN entities in various countries.

Meanwhile, Basuki explained that IKN development has now entered the phase of strengthening the core government area. The government is also beginning preparations for the construction of the judicial and legislative complexes as part of the long-term development plan through to 2045.

‘I conveyed the IKN development plan, which consists of five stages from 2022 to 2045. Currently, we are preparing to complete all development in the core central government office sector,’ said Basuki.

This UNDSS visit is considered an early signal of increasing international community attention towards IKN. Beyond strengthening dialogue with the UN, this step also opens up opportunities for broader global collaboration for Nusantara in the future.

‘In the coming year, we will focus on the development of the judicial and legislative complexes, which we have already begun,’ he added.
