UMY Suspends Pharmacy Lecturer Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) has taken decisive action regarding alleged sexual harassment involving a lecturer within its campus. The university has officially suspended the lecturer from the Pharmacy Programme, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK), pending a full investigation.
The move comes after information regarding the alleged harassment circulated widely, particularly on social media. Through an official statement numbered 1672/A.7-VIII/VII/2026, UMY stated it had reviewed the situation and proactively launched a comprehensive investigation.
“Based on the initial examination and recommendations from the Pharmacy Programme, FKIK, and the UMY PPKPT Task Force, the university has temporarily suspended the lecturer in question from all academic and non-academic duties,” the statement, signed by UMY Rector Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., read on Saturday (11/7/2026).
The campus explained that the suspension will remain in effect until the examination process is fully completed and a further decision is issued by the university.
In handling the case, UMY involved its Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education (Satgas PPKPT). On Saturday, 11 July 2026, a joint team from the Pharmacy Programme, FKIK, and the PPKPT Task Force conducted tracing, examination, and identification of the parties involved. Beyond investigating the circulating case, the team is also reviewing the possibility of other similar, unreported cases to ensure no issues are overlooked.
“The university leadership views this matter with the utmost seriousness and is committed to ensuring the campus environment remains a safe, dignified, and mutually respectful space that upholds accountability for the entire academic community,” the statement emphasised.
UMY also expressed deep concern and guaranteed protection and psychological support for the victims. The university assured the confidentiality of the whistleblower’s identity and provided a safe reporting channel free from intimidation.
UMY reiterated its zero-tolerance commitment towards all forms of violence and harassment on campus. The university requested the public and the entire academic community to allow the investigation process to proceed objectively. “UMY greatly appreciates efforts by the public to refrain from speculation, spreading identities, or sharing unverified information, as this could affect the examination process and harm the rights and privacy of the parties involved,” the statement concluded.
