Tanjungpinang (ANTARA) - Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH), as one of the state universities in Riau Islands Province (Kepri), is strengthening research based on local needs in border areas through five study centres.

UMRAH Rector Prof Agung Dhamar Syakti mentioned that the five study centres are the North Natuna Sea Study Centre, the Disaster Mitigation Study Centre, the Sustainable Development Goals Study Centre, the Policing Study Centre, and the Planning, Infrastructure, and Regionality Study Centre.

“These study centres are the result of collaboration with various relevant parties, one of which is the Riau Islands Regional Police (Polda) in the field of policing studies,” he said during the launch of the study centres in conjunction with the commemoration of National Education Day (Hardiknas) 2026 at the UMRAH Campus, Dompak Island, Tanjungpinang City, on Monday.

The Rector hopes that the presence of these study centres can provide solutions to various problems faced by Kepri, such as the North Natuna Sea Study Centre which aims to strengthen maritime sovereignty in Indonesia’s outermost islands.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Kepri, Nyanyang Haris Pratamura, hopes that the study centres operated by UMRAH will provide tangible contributions to the development of the maritime sector in the region.

As an archipelagic region with 98 percent of its area consisting of sea, according to him, Kepri faces significant challenges in managing marine resources, thus requiring innovation and technology to increase economic value.

“We want UMRAH to continue playing an active role in providing assistance through research and studies, while also being able to produce policies and solutions for the development of Kepri,” he stated.
