UMP student trapped for an hour in a lift as power outage hits Sumatra
According to detikSumbagsel, the victim was alone inside a lift when the incident occurred in the Economics Faculty building at UMP on Friday 22 May at 19:40 WIB. A sudden power outage caused the lift to stall between the second and third floors, trapping the occupant. The Palembang Fire and Rescue Team, having received the report, went directly to the scene. The rescue operation was carried out using a range of rescue tools with the assistance of a lift technician. ‘The evacuation used the rescue equipment available and was aided by a lift technician to open access and ensure the victim could be safely removed,’ said Deny, Head of Rescue and Evacuation at PBK Palembang City, on Saturday 23 May 2026. At the time, the campus was in near-total darkness due to the power outage. Around 20:40 WIB, the victim was evacuated from the lift in a safe condition and was immediately given medical attention. ‘The student female was successfully rescued in a safe condition; she was given oxygen due to anxiety from being trapped in the lift for a relatively long period,’ he added.
