Ummat Party: Minister Pigai Fails to Understand, Claims Amien Rais Violates Human Rights
Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai suspects that the statement by Amien Rais, Chairman of the Majelis Syura of the Ummat Party, regarding allegations against President Prabowo Subianto with Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, violates human rights. The Ummat Party claims that Minister Pigai fails to understand human rights.
Ummat Party Deputy Chairman Akhyar Muttaqin assessed that Article 28F of the 1945 Constitution states that every person has the right to communicate and obtain information to develop themselves and their social environment, and has the right to seek, obtain, possess, store, process, and transmit information using all available channels.
“So, in my belief, Mr Pigai fails to understand; human rights for communication and obtaining information are already regulated in the constitution as mentioned in Article 28F. It’s odd if Mr Amien is said to have violated human rights,” said Akhyar in his statement on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
Akhyar assessed that Amien Rais actually wants to uphold human rights as regulated in Article 28J Paragraph 2 regarding the allegations against Cabinet Secretary Teddy.
That article, said Akhyar, states that in exercising their rights and freedoms, everyone is obliged to comply with restrictions established by law with the aim of ensuring recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others.
“Our constitution clearly regulates that freedom must be in accordance with moral considerations and religious values; is being gay in line with moral and religious values?” said Akhyar.
Furthermore, Akhyar stated that Amien Rais’s statement actually just needs to be refuted by Teddy if it is indeed untrue. “If Teddy is not gay, he can just tell the public that Mr Amien’s allegation is not true or he can countersue Mr Amien. Case closed,” Akhyar concluded.
Previously, Natalius Pigai criticised Amien Rais’s statement regarding Prabowo and Teddy. Pigai assessed that Amien Rais’s statement cannot be categorised as freedom of opinion but is suspected of being a human rights violation.
“Mr Amien Rais’s statement does not automatically fall into the category of freedom of opinion. In the context of human rights, Mr Amien is reasonably suspected of committing an act of human rights violation,” said Pigai in his statement on Monday (4/5).
