UMJ Nutrition Student Wins Three Awards at 9th IPB International Nutrition Summer Course

A student from the Undergraduate Nutrition Programme at the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (FKK UMJ), Mochamad Shandy Akbar, has achieved three distinctions at the 9th IPB International Nutrition Summer Course (INSC). Shandy won first place for Best Infographic, second place for Best Infographic Presentation, and was named Best Participant in the event organised by the Nutrition Programme of Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB).

Shandy was one of three UMJ representatives in the activity. He competed alongside Anis Binti Azmi from Universiti Malaysia Sabah as a teammate. In the competition, participants were divided into large groups involving three countries and small groups comprising two countries. Each group was tasked with preparing an essay and an infographic, which was then presented by the ten best candidates.

Shandy explained that his team conducted thorough research on the sub-theme ‘Breastfeeding and Stunting’. They highlighted the conditions of communities in several small regions of Indonesia that still have authentic ethnic groups, such as NTT and Papua, which have not yet fully accessed nutrition education and medical services. The team also used the slogan ‘Let’s Bridge the Gap, Nourish the Future’ in their presentation. The slogan was one of the added values appreciated by the jury from Malaysia, Indonesia through IPB, and Japan.

Shandy said he was proud to have the opportunity to represent FKK, the Undergraduate Nutrition Programme, and UMJ in an international activity. He believes the experience will serve as a foundation for developing himself as a future nutritionist. He gained many insights and information related to health systems, including the nutritional conditions of communities in Japan and Malaysia.

Shandy also encouraged students to be brave in trying new experiences, expanding their networks, and stepping out of their comfort zones. He hopes students will continue to uphold the good name of their study programme and institution through various achievements at national and international levels. The international-scale activity involved universities from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan, with participants from Niigata Prefecture in Japan, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, UMJ, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, IPB, UMS, and other universities.
