UMI establishment gets foreign support

BATAM, Riau Islands: The establishment of the Indonesian Maritime University (UMI) in Batam, Riau Islands, has received strong support from three countries.

Nada Faza Soraya, the chairwoman of Indonesian Maritime Education Foundation (YPMI), said on Saturday that the three countries in question were Norway, China and Japan.

The three countries, through their embassy officials, universities and international agencies, have expressed readiness to support the university by providing grants in the form of books and laboratory equipment. The university will be established soon on Setokok Island near Batam city. The university is planning to have 2,000 students. -- JP
