UMI and MUI Collaborate to Build Sharia Health Ecosystem

Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) and the Advocacy and Health Coordination Institute (LAKK) of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) are collaborating to build an integrated sharia health ecosystem, encompassing education, research, innovation, competency certification, and health services based on Islamic values. UMI Rector Prof Hambali Thalib stated in Makassar on Monday that sharia health represents a strategic collaborative space that brings together science, health services, and Islamic values to deliver broader benefits to society. “Sharia health must be a tangible contribution from Indonesia for the ummah. Higher education institutions have a responsibility to produce superior, ethical knowledge, innovation, and health services oriented towards the common good,” he said. “Through this collaboration with LAKK MUI, we hope UMI can take on a strategic role in presenting a sharia health ecosystem that benefits not only Indonesia but also the Islamic world,” Prof Hambali continued. UMI Vice Rector V Setyawati Yani explained that one of the main agendas of the partnership is the establishment of a UMI Sharia Health Study Centre as a centre for educational development, research, training, innovation, and national collaboration. “UMI has developed various Islamic health studies, including Prophetic Medicine (Thibbun Nabawi). Together with LAKK MUI, we aim to integrate academic strengths, research, and community service within a single ecosystem capable of providing tangible benefits to the public,” she clarified. Meanwhile, Dean of the UMI Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Nasrudin, noted that the foundation for developing sharia health at UMI has been built since 2012 through various Prophetic Medicine (Thibbun Nabawi) research projects. He added that this development is strengthened by the existence of the UMI Academic Health Center (AHC), which integrates the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Public Health, a teaching hospital, and a network of dozens of partner community health centres and clinical teaching sites. LAKK MUI Chairman Bayu Wahyudi assessed that UMI possesses the academic strength and a complete ecosystem to become a centre for sharia health development in Indonesia.
