ULM Student Pioneers Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired Students

A student from the Special Education Programme, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) Banjarmasin, Alexander Dwiky Hermawan, has pioneered a multi-platform assistive technology concept to provide adaptive physical education access for visually impaired students. “This creative idea is titled Movevision, an innovation specifically designed to help students with visual disabilities actively participate in sports,” he said in Banjarmasin on Monday. Alex acknowledged that visually impaired students have typically been mere spectators sitting on the sidelines during sports lessons. However, with Movevision, they can move by following instructions connected to a mobile application, smartwatch, and earphones. The Movevision concept was born from Alex’s concern over the limited space and active participation for students with visual disabilities in physical education learning activities at school. By utilising technology connected to a movement guidance system, Movevision opens opportunities for visually impaired students to move actively and participate independently in physical education lessons, so they are no longer just spectators on the sidelines. “In a broader context, the Movevision concept also contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 3, 4, and 10 concerning health, quality education, and reduced inequality,” he explained. For this innovative idea, Alexander won second runner-up in the Disability category at the 2026 National Outstanding Student Selection (Pilmapres) event organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs (Ditbelmawa). ULM Rector Prof Ahmad Alim Bachri affirmed that Alexander’s achievement is tangible proof of ULM’s commitment as an inclusive campus. He stated that ULM accommodates all students to develop and achieve without exception. “Alex has proven that limitations are not barriers; this achievement serves as inspiration and confirmation that students with disabilities have equal opportunities to create,” he said.
