ULM develops genomics and forensics laboratory
Banjarbaru (ANTARA) - Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) is continuing to strengthen its research capacity and scientific services by developing a genomics and forensics laboratory within the Academic Support Unit (UPA) of the ULM Integrated Laboratory.
“The development of the genomics laboratory is a strategic step to expand the laboratory’s role, both in testing services and research,” said the Head of the UPA Integrated Laboratory ULM, Dr Liling Triyasmono, in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, on Wednesday.
Genomics is the comprehensive study of an organism’s entire genetic material (genome), including gene interactions and environmental influences.
He explained that this development is also supported by an initiative for cooperation between ULM and the South Kalimantan Regional Police, particularly in the field of DNA forensics.
In addition, the laboratory is planned to be equipped with various state-of-the-art equipment, such as gene sequencing technology, paternity testing, and DNA analysis capable of predicting disease potential and supporting treatment planning.
“We hope that the development of this laboratory will have a broad impact, not only for the ULM academic community but also for society,” he stated.
Liling also assured that the ULM laboratory is open for collaboration and research utilisation, including subsidy schemes for researchers who wish to develop studies in the fields of genomics and forensics.
As an initial step, ULM has held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Initiative for Developing the Genomics and Forensics Laboratory at the UPA Integrated Laboratory ULM in Banjarbaru.
