A team from Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM)’s Wetland Academic Support Unit conducted mangrove growth monitoring in Sabuhur Village, Jorong District, Tanah Laut Regency, South Kalimantan, where 5 hectares were planted in 2025 last year. “This activity aims to evaluate the condition and success rate of the mangrove plants planted in June last year,” said ULM Vice Rector for Cooperation, Public Relations, and Information Systems, Dr Yusuf Azis, in Banjarmasin on Sunday. Parameters monitored included plant height, stem condition, and survival rate. Yusuf stated that most mangrove plants showed good growth based on monitoring results. The planted mangroves have adapted well to the coastal environment influenced by tidal movements. “The survival rate of the mangrove planting is around 80 to 90 percent, with plants still alive and growing well,” he said. However, some mangrove plants were found dead or with broken stems, likely due to natural factors such as strong winds and coastal weather conditions affecting young plants. Yusuf explained that monitoring is a crucial part of the mangrove conservation and rehabilitation program in Tanah Laut Regency. It serves not only to evaluate planting success but also to inform future planning for more effective and sustainable mangrove management.
