UKSW suspends lecturers

SALATIGA, Central Java: The Satya Wacana Christian University has suspended 20 staff members and slashed their salaries by 50 percent for supporting a recent student riot on campus.

Rector John JOI Ihalauw said he could not condone the behavior of the lecturers.

Among those suspended are Nico L. Kana, dean of the post- graduate program, Ariel Heryanto, Sumarthana, and Limson Singalang.

The riot, which left a number of buildings damaged, marked the climax of a long conflict within the university pitting the rector and a handful of staff lecturers against hundreds of students.

Three students, Helio, Tony and Zagota, are under police custody in connection with the riot. (har)
