Ukraine Strikes Key Russian Submarine-Hunting Assets, Dealing Blow to Moscow’s NATO Defences

Ukraine is increasingly expanding its attacks into Russian territory. Ukrainian drones reportedly struck two Russian Tu-142 strategic anti-submarine aircraft, a rare military asset crucial to Moscow’s ability to monitor and hunt NATO submarines.

Der Spiegel described the attack not merely as a tactical blow in the Russia-Ukraine war, but with broader implications due to hitting a key component of Russia’s strategic defence against NATO.

‘For Moscow, this sensitive strike particularly affects the possibility of a war with NATO,’ Der Spiegel reported on Monday, 1 June 2026.

The Tu-142 is a long-range maritime patrol aircraft designed to detect, track, and destroy enemy submarines. The fleet has been a vital part of Russia’s maritime surveillance network for decades, especially in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, which are strategic battlegrounds with NATO.

Western media reports indicate Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian airbase in Taganrog near the Sea of Azov. Circulating footage shows drones hitting the aircraft directly on the runway.

The strategic value of the Tu-142 means Russia’s losses are difficult to replace. These Soviet-era aircraft are no longer in production, and the number of active units is limited. Consequently, losing even one unit could impact Russia’s maritime patrol capabilities in the long term.

The attack also illustrates the evolving nature of warfare since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Initially, Ukraine focused on defending the front lines, but Kyiv is now increasingly targeting high-value assets deep within Russian territory using relatively low-cost drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated such attacks are a response to ongoing Russian aggression. ‘We are legitimately bringing the war back to its source,’ he said.

Military analysts assess that strikes on strategic assets like the Tu-142 show Ukraine is no longer merely disrupting Russian combat operations at the front. Kyiv appears to be aiming to erode Russia’s broader military capabilities, including Moscow’s balance of power with NATO.
