Ukraine will assist the United States and Israel in attacks against Iran. Previously, Washington and Tel Aviv attacked Tehran since 28 February, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

This has prompted Iran’s retaliation against American military bases in the Gulf, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. As of Monday, 9 March 2026 morning, oil prices reached US$113 per barrel for both Brent and WTI.

According to CNBC International, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated to The New York Times that Kyiv has agreed to Washington’s request to send interceptor drones and drone expert teams. This is specifically to protect American military bases in Jordan.

He expressed enthusiasm about offering his hard-won expertise and advanced technology in combating Iranian Shahed drones, which Russia previously used to attack Kyiv during the war with Ukraine.

“As the war in Iran expands beyond its borders, Ukraine has sent interceptor drones and drone expert teams to protect US military bases in Jordan,” Zelenskyy stated.

He explained that the United States initially made the assistance request on Thursday, and the Ukrainian team departed the following day. Ukrainian technology is expected to arrive in the Middle East soon.

“We reacted immediately,” Zelenskyy responded.

“I said, yes, of course, we will send our experts.”

Whilst Ukraine collaborates with America in the Middle East, Kyiv hopes to demonstrate a difference from Russia. Previously, US officials stated that Russia has provided intelligence to Iran during the war, including satellite imagery showing the locations of American warships and military personnel.

Zelenskyy stated he has also seen intelligence indicating that drones now swarming from Iran contain “Russian components”.

The Ukrainian leader said he wishes to help Middle Eastern nations but also needs to balance such requests with Ukraine’s domestic needs, as the war there has been ongoing for five years.

Meanwhile, the war in Iran could cut off the flow of critically needed defence weapons for Ukraine. Kyiv has offered to exchange its interceptor drones with Middle Eastern countries for more powerful systems that Ukraine needs to counter Russian ballistic missiles.

Ukraine also stated it would assist Middle Eastern countries in exchange for diplomatic assistance in pushing Russia towards a ceasefire. Zelenskyy noted that some Middle Eastern nations have “very strong relationships with Russia”.

“That is why I said, look, so perhaps they can talk to Russia and Russia will pause for a moment,” he said.

“In that case, of course, we can help the Middle East defend themselves,” he added.

Besides Ukraine, several other nations have also considered requests from Gulf countries to help counter Iranian attacks. Australia said it is reviewing the request whilst reaffirming that it will refrain from participating in offensive action against Iran.

China sent a special envoy to the Middle East last week to mediate a ceasefire. Its top diplomat, Wang Yi, reiterated Beijing’s call to end military action during a press conference on Sunday, regretting the conflict as a war that “should never have happened”.
