UKI area not safe
UKI area not safe
From Warta Kota
The area in front of Indonesian Christian University (UKI)
has long been notorious for its traffic jams and crime. Many
people have fallen victim to crime in this area. As far as I know
this matter has frequently been raised by the mass media, but the
authorities have done little to solve the problem.
Presently the conditions here are getting worse. The traffic
jams are more severe and the criminals are getting younger, most
of them preadolescents. At least I was twice victimized by those
young rascals.
The story is as follows: Not long ago I was on a metro mini
bus plying the Cililitan-Pasar Minggu route. There were only very
few passengers in the bus so the bus waited for more passengers
in front of UKI.
Suddenly, a gang of 10 youngsters appeared and started to
demand money from the passengers. Those reluctant to part with
their money were physically threatened.
Unfortunately on another day I experienced the same thing at
the same place while I was again on a metro mini bus plying the
same route. I realize now that UKI's vicinity is not safe.
I would like to warn others not to take this route unless
absolutely necessary. Also, if possible, do not take your mobile
phone out of your pocket or bag while in the bus as you may be
robbed of it.
The modus operandi is as follows: Someone approaches you
claiming the cellular phone you are holding is the one that he
had lost, and without warning he snatches it away. While the
victim is in total confusion, other passengers can only watch.
I would like to know why the police and relevant authorities
in Jakarta haven't addressed the crime in this area. The public
needs to feel secure, it is their right.
