YANGON (AP): A British woman was detained in Myanmar for demonstrating against the military government, a week after another Briton was jailed for supporting dissidents' call for an uprising.
Rachel Goldwyn, 28, of Barnes in southwest London, was arrested as hundreds of passersby looked on Tuesday at a busy intersection near Sule Pagoda, a famous Buddhist shrine in the center of the Myanmar capital.
Wearing a traditional sarong, she chained herself to a lamppost, chanted pro-democracy slogans in the Myanmar language and handed out antigovernment leaflets, witnesses said.
Her slogans included "Give democracy immediately," and "Please join the 9999 demonstration," referring to the dissident call for an uprising against the military government on Thursday, or 9-9- 99, a date seen as auspicious in Myanmar, also known as Burma.
