UK Prime Minister Urges EU to Increase Contributions to NATO
Moscow (ANTARA) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday urged the European Union to increase its contributions to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) amid US President Donald Trump’s disappointment with the alliance’s allies.
On 1 April, Prime Minister Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to NATO amid suspicions of a US withdrawal from the alliance. He also stated that the UK would not take sides in the Middle East conflict but would strengthen ties with Europe.
“This is the most effective military alliance the world has ever known. Do we Europeans need to do more? Yes. I have been saying this for almost two years to our European partners. We will continue to voice this. This is in America’s interest and also in Europe’s interest,” Prime Minister Starmer told reporters during his visit to the Middle East.
Trump also added that he is not surprised that the majority of NATO member countries do not want to get involved and called the alliance a “one-way street.”
President Trump also stated that assistance from NATO is no longer needed.
On Wednesday (8/4), The Wall Street Journal reported that Washington is considering withdrawing troops from NATO member countries deemed unsupportive of the US and Israel in the Middle East conflict.
