UK May Ban Social Media for Users Under 16

The United Kingdom is reportedly considering banning social media use for individuals under 16, following similar steps taken by countries such as Australia and Indonesia. The news was reported by TechCrunch on Sunday (14/6), citing multiple UK media outlets that suggest Prime Minister Keir Starmer is poised to announce the ban. Initially, the government was studying options for restricting children’s access to social media, but recent reports from The Guardian and the Financial Times indicate Starmer is now ready to unveil the policy in a speech on Monday (15/6) local time. Under such a scheme, platforms including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Twitch, and Kick would all be prohibited for users under 16. Other products, such as gaming applications, would not be banned entirely, but younger users would need to have features like the ability to chat with strangers removed. Prior to this potential blanket ban, the UK had already passed age verification legislation aimed at protecting children’s safety in the digital space. However, the discussion around a full prohibition has intensified due to growing concerns about the impact of social media on British teenagers and children. One campaigner called for the ban, testifying that her child developed an eating disorder and self-harming behaviours that were ‘greatly exacerbated by harmful content she consumed online.’ The proposed ban has also drawn criticism, with some arguing it risks isolating children. Existing age verification laws, which have also been adopted in several US states, have been deemed ineffective by critics who view them as a threat to online privacy and anonymity.
