UK Invests £8.4 Billion in Nuclear Submarines

Prime Minister Andy Burnham will announce an investment of £8.4 billion for the construction of four Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines. The major investment in Britain’s nuclear deterrent will create jobs and opportunities for young people for years to come, according to a statement from Downing Street on Thursday. In the new phase, one of the four submarines is scheduled to complete sea trials and enter service with the Royal Navy in the early 2030s. Under the new contract, the second submarine, HMS Valiant, is confirmed to reach the sea trials stage, while construction continues on the third and fourth vessels. In late June, the Ministry of Defence released its long-term defence budget for the next four years, allocating nearly £300 billion across various defence sectors. However, former chancellor Rachel Reeves noted that £4.7 billion of that sum remains unfunded, with the source of financing to be determined in the upcoming autumn budget.
