UK Intelligence Reveals Possibility of Russia Attacking NATO by 2030
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has disclosed the results of a British intelligence assessment regarding the possibility of Russia attacking NATO in 2030, warning NATO countries to prepare. “It is our intelligence assessment and the assessment of other NATO countries that Russia could attack NATO as early as 2030,” Starmer said, as reported by AFP on Friday (5/6/2026). “So you can see the urgency and the priority we are placing on this now,” he added during a visit to a drone factory in southwest England. This echoes similar timeframes outlined by other European leaders and NATO chief Mark Rutte, who warned in December that Russia “could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years. Starmer has pledged to increase defence spending to 2.5 per cent of gross domestic product starting next year, rising to three per cent in the next parliament. A 10-year defence investment plan following a review of Britain’s defence capabilities was supposed to be published late last year but has yet to be released. Starmer announced the plan would be published before the NATO summit in Turkey, which begins on 7 July. British media reported the plan is delayed due to disagreements between the finance ministry and other departments over costs. Starmer stressed to journalists the plan would be”fully funded”. Earlier on Friday, the head of the UK military warned that Britain must bolster its defences in response to the threat posed by Russia, which invaded Ukraine more than four years ago. “In my 35-year career, this is the most dangerous period I have ever experienced,” Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton told the BBC. “And as a consequence, it is vital that we enhance the capability and readiness of our armed forces alongside our allies to deter our adversaries from doing something foolish.”
