UK Highlights Tourist Safety in Labuan Bajo
The safety of British tourists was a serious concern for the British Embassy during a working visit to the Manggarai Barat Police headquarters in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, on Friday (14/8). The delegation was led directly by the British Consul for Indonesia, Charlotte Whitaker.
During the meeting, Charlotte highlighted a number of issues directly related to the security, safety, comfort and legal certainty for foreign tourists visiting Labuan Bajo and the Komodo National Park area.
According to Charlotte, Labuan Bajo has become an increasingly popular destination for British citizens. Therefore, the protection of British nationals while in tourist areas is a top priority for the British government.
“Labuan Bajo is one of the dream destinations for British citizens when visiting Indonesia. Therefore, the safety and legal certainty for our citizens is a top priority,” said Charlotte.
Although interest from British tourists continues to grow, Charlotte noted that there are still a number of risks that need to be anticipated. One of the main issues highlighted is the existence of unlicensed travel agents or tour operators that have the potential to harm tourists.
She assessed that foreign tourists are a vulnerable group when using travel services that lack legality, service standards, or clear consumer protection mechanisms. This is crucial given that the majority of tourists in Labuan Bajo use travel services for marine tour packages, including liveaboards to the Komodo National Park area.
In addition to the issue of agent legality, the British Embassy is also paying attention to the limited number of licensed tour guides and aspects of maritime safety.
“We discussed the handling of fictitious travel cases that often harm foreign tourists, the readiness of maritime safety equipment such as life jackets, and communication barriers due to language constraints between ship crew and tourists,” Charlotte added.
This safety issue is vital because the main activities in Labuan Bajo are dominated by sea trips to popular destinations such as Komodo Island, Padar Island and Rinca Island.
In response, Manggarai Barat Police Chief AKBP Christian Kadang stressed that the police will not give room to criminals who could damage the image of Labuan Bajo as an international tourist destination.
Christian assured that the Manggarai Barat Police are fully committed to ensuring the safety of all tourists, both domestic and international.
“Regarding unscrupulous unlicensed travel agents or rogue brokers who harm tourists, we will ensure firm legal action without compromise,” Christian asserted.
