UK Boycotts Israel, New PM Issues Warning
Tensions are rising between the United Kingdom and Israel following the British government’s decision to boycott imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, Palestine.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who was recently inaugurated on 20 July, stated that the UK must “fight for something.” He emphasised that while the UK has long supported a two-state solution in the Middle East, rhetoric must be backed by concrete action.
“Leadership is about taking action when there is injustice, when we need to rectify injustice, when people are being evicted from their homes,” he said, as reported by Reuters on Thursday (10/9/2026). “In this difficult and dangerous world, the UK must fight for something,” he asserted.
The import ban was announced on Tuesday by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, alongside measures targeting companies and individuals linked to illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank. This represents one of the most significant shifts in British policy towards Israel in years.
The UK is not acting alone; the decision is part of a coordinated effort with France and Canada to pressure Israel regarding settlement expansions, which both nations believe threaten the two-state solution.
Israel has reacted angrily to the sanctions. The Zionist state ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem and banned 12 British citizens from entering Israel in retaliation.
Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has employed divisive tactics, expressing gratitude to Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Conservative opposition, for her criticism of Burnham’s actions. Badenoch wrote in The Sun newspaper that the current Labour-led government is “prioritising its political interests over our national interests.” However, in reality, she avoided the issue when she had the opportunity to question Burnham on Wednesday, choosing instead to focus on defence spending.
“We will always support the underdog and take any action we can to support them,” asserted Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester. “That is leadership on the world stage; the UK remains faithful to what they have always done,” he added, to cheers from his Members of Parliament.
