UIN Sunan Kalijaga Tops PTKIN in International Publications, Strengthens Global Research Reputation
UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, according to SciVal and Scopus benchmarking data as of May 2026, has successfully increased its international scientific publication productivity while strengthening academic impact through higher citation rates. This achievement is a key indicator for measuring research quality, academic competitiveness, and global reputation of Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia.
Dr. Abdul Qoyum, Head of LPPM (Research and Community Service Institution) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, stated that in the Scholarly Output indicator—the number of international publications—the university ranked first among PTKIN (State Islamic Higher Education Institutions) with a total of 426 documents from 2025 to 2026. This comprised 308 publications in 2025 and 118 in 2026 up to the data collection period.
He added that this achievement reflects growing international competitiveness and a stronger academic research culture at the university, alongside increased international scientific collaboration and greater recognition of the quality of research produced by the academic community.
According to Dr. Qoyum, international citation performance is also exceptional. UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta topped the rankings with 898 citations, comprising 865 in 2025 and 33 in 2026. This confirms that the publications are not only numerous but also highly impactful and frequently cited by international researchers.
“Looking specifically at 2026 achievements, publication productivity continues to rise positively despite the year not yet concluding. By the data collection period, UIN Sunan Kalijaga had produced 118 reputable international documents in 2026—the highest among PTKIN institutions,” he said.
In terms of 2026 citations, Dr. Qoyum added, UIN Sunan Kalijaga again led with 33 international citations. Rising citation numbers indicate that the university’s research and publications are increasingly relevant and recognised within global academic discourse.
Rektor Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan stated that these international publication and citation achievements are part of UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s broader strategy to transform into a globally reputable leading university. He emphasised that strengthening research performance is a top priority for enhancing academic competitiveness internationally.
“International publication productivity is not merely an academic performance metric but a leading indicator of future research quality and academic reputation. This milestone confirms that the ongoing research transformation is on the right path and steadily strengthening,” he said.
He noted that these achievements are not instant but the result of hard work and collaboration across the university, including faculty, researchers, students, journal managers, and LPPM as the institution’s research support body.
The Rektor added that LPPM continues to strengthen research and publication culture sustainably, through international research collaboration networks, partnerships with foreign universities, and enhanced co-publication with global academic communities.
These results further solidify UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s international recognition, complementing previous achievements such as 7th place in Scimago Institutions Rankings for Religious Studies and 37th in QS World University Rankings by Subject in the same field.
