Tangerang (ANTARA) - The Centre for Communication and Media Studies (P2KM) at UIN Jakarta has emphasised digital literacy for parents in guiding their children when accessing social media, following the enactment of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Protection and Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas). “Because the future of our children is determined by strong digital literacy. Digital literacy can take the form of a curriculum that can be learned in the family, classroom, and public spaces,” said Deden Mauli Darajat, Executive Director of P2KM at the Faculty of Da’wah and Communication Sciences (FDIKOM) UIN Jakarta, when contacted on Sunday. Deden explained that the presence of PP Tunas is very important to protect children from the negative impacts of the digital world, as children are immersed in a flood of information and content that needs to be filtered. Nevertheless, he continued, regulations will be fragile without a strong ecosystem. Families, schools, communities, government, and even digital platform providers must collaborate to strengthen this digital ecosystem. He revealed that if implemented with an educational and collaborative approach, this regulation could produce a generation that is not only “safe” in the digital world but also “empowered” within it. “Conversely, if it is merely repressive, it risks creating a generation that is left behind or even rebels digitally,” he stated. Previously, the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, emphasised that the presence of PP Tunas is an urgency for Indonesia because it can safeguard privacy while protecting children’s data in the digital space. This was conveyed by the Minister, reflecting on studies and legal cases that have occurred in other countries where children’s data and privacy in the digital space have been exploited and even monetised unethically and irresponsibly. PP Tunas will be effective from 28 March 2026, restricting children from high-risk digital platforms, particularly for its initial implementation applying to eight digital platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, Instagram, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox. It is recorded that up to one day before the implementation of PP Tunas, precisely on 27 March 2026 at 21:30 WIB, only two digital platforms, X and Bigo Live, have full compliance with PP Tunas. Meanwhile, TikTok and Roblox are categorised as platforms that are partially cooperative with PP Tunas. The other four platforms—Facebook, Threads, Instagram, and YouTube—still do not meet the provisions of PP Tunas.
