UI welcomes Sunday jazz fest

DEPOK: The prestigious Jazz Goes to Campus will be held on Sunday at the Economics School of the University of Indonesia, Depok.

This year's event is themed Expressing the Inexpressible and was launched in October with the Jazz Clinic and Workshop. Last week, the event hosted a Jazz Competition at Plaza Semanggi shopping mall.

Unlike previous years, the 27th jazz festival is dominated by local musicians and singers, featuring well-known names such as Benny Likumahua and Spectrum, Bertha, Buby Chen, Cendi Luntungan & Friends, Idang Rasyidi, the Krakatau Band, Syaharani and Wayan Balawan.

The jazz festival started in 1978 as a campus event -- hence its name -- which grew into a major annual music fest that featured renowned international jazz musicians and singers. It drew a record crowd of about 14,000 in 2000, an unprecedented showing for a country unfamiliar with the musical genre.

Sunday's event will start at 10 a.m. -- JP
