Universitas Indonesia has deactivated 16 students from the Faculty of Law who are suspected of harassing 27 female students and lecturers through a group chat, from 15 April until 30 May 2026. During the deactivation period, the 16 students are not permitted to participate in any educational activities or teaching and learning processes, including lectures, academic guidance, or other activities related to academic affairs. They are also prohibited from being on campus premises, except for examination purposes by the Sexual Violence Prevention Task Force or for urgent matters that cannot be postponed, under university supervision. The university has also imposed restrictions on the involvement of the suspected perpetrators in student organisation activities. UI emphasises that this temporary deactivation is not a final sanction but part of the administrative process for examination. The university upholds the principles of presumption of innocence, justice, and protection of individual rights. In its implementation, UI ensures a victim-centred approach, providing ongoing psychological counselling, legal assistance, and academic support. The confidentiality of all parties’ identities is strictly maintained throughout the process. UI also urges all parties not to disseminate unverified information and to avoid speculation that could disrupt the handling process. Wise public support is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the process and protecting all involved parties. Further developments on this case will be communicated periodically through the university’s official channels, prioritising caution, information accuracy, and protection of all involved parties. Following the deactivation of the 16 students, UI coordinated with the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (Kementerian PPPA) to strengthen synergy in handling the case. The meeting, held at the University Administration Centre Building on Wednesday afternoon, aimed to directly convey the handling progress, including the initial chronology, steps taken, and follow-up plans for the investigation process. In the meeting, the Ministry of PPPA expressed appreciation for UI’s swift actions, including the temporary deactivation policy as an effort to maintain examination objectivity.
