UI Students Develop AI-Based TOEFL Preparation Platform

Students from the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Indonesia (Fasilkom UI) have developed Tofly, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based platform for TOEFL ITP preparation. “We used to have to take courses or buy thick books to study for the TOEFL. The process felt tedious and did not provide feedback that truly addressed our individual weaknesses,” said Farrel Reksa. Farrel explained that this experience prompted him and his team to leverage information technology and AI developments to build a more personal, practical, and affordable learning platform. Tofly was developed by 2023 Fasilkom UI students, with Farrel Reksa as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yahya Ayyas as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Asyer Samuel as Chief Information Officer (CIO), and Hubban Syadid as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). The idea for Tofly arose from the condition of TOEFL learning, which still largely relies on exercise books, expensive courses, and minimal feedback tailored to user needs. By utilising AI technology, the platform is designed to analyse user learning outcomes, identify weaknesses in each test section, and provide customised exercise and learning recommendations. This approach enables users to have a more effective learning experience according to their individual abilities and target scores. The platform also features a learning ecosystem including free weekly workshops and Video on Demand materials, an evaluation system through Weekly Try Outs and Progress Tracking, as well as gamification features like Daily Streak and Progress Badges to help maintain consistency. In 2026, Tofly received funding from the Student Entrepreneurship Development Programme (P2MW) organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs (Belmawa). Farrel stated that this achievement is part of UI students’ efforts to present research and technology-based innovations that can benefit the wider community.
