UI Students Create RunSight, AI-Powered Smart Glasses for Visually Impaired Runners
Impressive news comes from four Universitas Indonesia (UI) students who have created an AI-powered smart glasses. The Labmino team from UI won Samsung Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) Indonesia 2025 with RunSight, an inclusive AI innovation. Labmino developed RunSight as AI glasses capable of helping runners with visual disabilities to run safely and with confidence. The glasses feature an AI-based navigation system designed to assist users with visual impairments, including total blindness. Labmino tells the story behind RunSight’s birth: achievement not only due to research, but also empathy. Development began from an empathy-based approach. The team explored navigation solutions to assist people with visual disabilities in their mobility. From direct observation and interviews, Labmino gleaned specific needs, namely safety and independence challenges when running on tracks. The UI researchers then steered toward a more specific and impactful solution. They aimed to deliver safety and independence for those with visual disabilities while running on tracks. “We decided to focus on track running and design a wearable that is light and camera RGB-based so it is comfortable to use and affordable,” said Anthony Edbert Feriyanto, one of the Labmino team members. He also explained that Labmino uses multimodal AI to support the needs of visually impaired users to be more precise and adaptive. Technically, RunSight can recognise objects around the user, read the running track, and adjust directions based on the user’s speed. The glasses capture video to be processed by AI in real time to detect the track lines and obstacles ahead. The system will provide voice instructions to keep the user on the safe track, enabling visually impaired runners to avoid objects in their path. In addition, the real-time voice instructions aim to help users adjust direction and speed while running. The Labmino team also developed system logic based on safety principles, thresholds, frame smoothing, and rules to avoid sudden directions for users. The RunSight innovation journey took Labmino to the global level. The UI team became one of the ten best at SFT Global Ambassador. This victory carried RunSight to the international stage, earning recognition for a local-context innovation designed to meet users’ needs. The solution from Labmino opens opportunities for more inclusive technology in the world of sports. Labmino also achieved a technology-based solution that is impactful and sustainable. “We hope this achievement can inspire Indonesian youth to dream bigger, innovate with empathy, and believe that their work can mean something to many people,” said Anthony.
