UI student still suspended
JAKARTA (JP): University of Indonesia (UI) Rector M.K.
Tadjudin has not yet carried out the court's decision on the
postponement of a student suspension.
Tadjudin's lawyer Zulfa Djoko Basuki told the Jakarta State
Administrative Court yesterday that the rector has yet to decide
whether the postponement of suspension of Rifardi Rifiar, a
student at the school of medicine, will benefit the campus.
"Postponing the suspension of a student who violates
regulations will bring many consequences for academic life in the
University of Indonesia," Zulfa quoted the rector as saying.
She did not go into details.
"As a lawyer, I have discussed the court's decision with the
rector, and he said he would consider it," Zulfa said, adding
that she could not answer any more questions.
Rector M.K. Tadjudin has issued a letter of decision which
strengthening the decision of the dean of medicine school on the
suspension of Rifardi Rifiar for three months.
The suspension, began on Nov. 2, 1995, was decided on the
ground that Rifardi beat up seven other students of the school of
medicine.
Dean Girindro Pringgodigdo said the beating contravened campus
regulations.
Rifardi then filed two lawsuits against the dean and rector at
the Jakarta State Administrative Court.
Head of the Jakarta State Administrative Court, Benjamin
Mangkoedilaga, issued a decision on Dec. 7 which ordered the
rector to delay the suspension of Rifardi while the case is being
tried.
Judge Mustahdi ruled last week that the dean's decision was
illegal. The dean is appealing.
The court will rule on Rifardi's lawsuit against the rector on
Jan. 16. (29)
