UI Student Council to Stage Follow-Up Protest at Bundaran HI

The University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Body (BEM UI) will proceed with a follow-up ‘Indonesia Towards Bankruptcy’ demonstration at the Bundaran HI roundabout in Central Jakarta. BEM UI Chairman Yatalathof Ma’shum Imawan confirmed the follow-up action at Bundaran HI. According to him, the follow-up protest aligns with the commitment made in their statement of position before dissolving the crowd at the 12 June action. “It is in accordance with the commitment in the statement of position before the action was dissolved,” Athof said when contacted on Sunday, 14 June 2026. Not only a follow-up action, BEM UI will invite more participants and other campuses to build a larger mass. However, which campuses will be invited to join is still awaiting further consolidation. On 12 June 2026, masses from the BEM UI alliance concluded their demonstration in front of the Thamrin Nine Ballroom building in Central Jakarta. The alliance was supposed to demonstrate at Bundaran HI, but they were blocked by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri). There are five demands that the Alliance will voice, namely stopping the wastage of the state budget (APBN), lowering the prices of staple goods and fuel, halting the free nutritious meal programme (MBG) and the construction of the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives. Furthermore, the alliance demands an end to militarism in the civilian sphere, and lastly demands that President Prabowo Subianto stop deflecting and acknowledge the government’s mistakes. After delivering speeches, the UI Student Alliance issued a statement of position. In its stance, the alliance observed that the economy is only growing on paper, a situation that contrasts with conditions on the ground. “Rice prices are up. Jobs are hard to find,” said an Alliance representative. According to the Alliance, President Prabowo Subianto displays an arrogant demeanour, lacking accountability, empathy, and being anti-people. It assessed that the promise of a Golden Indonesia is instead steering towards economic and democratic bankruptcy. The Alliance also criticised the TNI for guarding the action. According to the Alliance, the TNI should be safeguarding sovereignty. The Alliance stated there would be a follow-up action. Within one to two days, the Alliance will bring a larger mass. The students who took part in the 12 June protest came from the UI-wide BEM alliance (BEM UI and 15 Faculty BEMs within UI), IPB University Student Executive Board, PNJ Student Executive Board, Pancasila University Student Executive Board, Gunadarma BEM Alliance, FMN Pusat, FMN UI, Pembebasan, and Semar UI.
