UI Student Council Opens Donations for 'Indonesia Bankrupt' Protest
The University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Body (BEM UI) has opened a fundraising campaign for an action titled ‘Indonesia Bangkrut’ (Indonesia Bankrupt), scheduled to be held at the HI Roundabout in Central Jakarta on Friday, 12 June 2026. The donation announcement was uploaded via the Instagram account @bemui_official on 11 June 2026. In addition to donations, BEM UI has also opened participant registration for data collection purposes. The action will commence with an assembly point at the FISIP field at the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java, at 10.00 WIB, with a dress code stipulating a yellow jacket and black shirt.
BEM UI Chairman Yatalathof Ma’shum Imawan stated that fundraising is conducted for every action to finance field necessities such as transportation and protest equipment. ‘We fundraise for every action,’ he said on Thursday, 11 June 2026. Yatalathof explained that donations are not limited to money but also include items needed for the action, such as food, drinking water, and medical equipment. ‘We accept anything as long as it is useful for the action,’ he said.
Regarding the number of participants, he could not yet confirm as he was still awaiting the results of a technical meeting. However, according to him, this action involves 15 faculty-level student executive bodies at the University of Indonesia and several organisations from other campuses, including IPB University, Jakarta State Polytechnic, Pancasila University, the Gunadarma University alliance, and student groups such as the National Student Front of UI and others. ‘There are several organisations and movement nodes that will still confirm their attendance in tonight’s meeting,’ said Yatalathof.
The ‘Indonesia Bangkrut’ action is the result of a national consolidation of students across the Greater Jakarta area held at the University of Indonesia’s Pusgiwa building on 10 June 2026. From this consolidation, the students agreed upon five key demands, including urging President Prabowo Subianto to stop the free nutritious meal (MBG) programme and the Koperasi Desa Merah Putih (Red and White Village Cooperatives). Additionally, they demand an end to state budget wastefulness, a reduction in the prices of essential goods and fuel, and an end to militarism in civilian spaces. According to Yatalathof, these demands arose from deteriorating economic and democratic conditions. He believes Indonesia possesses vast resources but has not yet been able to deliver equitable prosperity.
On a separate occasion, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government respects the aspirations of students, including demands related to the stabilisation of the rupiah exchange rate. He asserted that Indonesia’s economic conditions are influenced by many factors and cannot be resolved instantly. ‘It is certainly influenced by many factors,’ said Prasetyo at the DPR/MPR/DPD complex in Jakarta on Monday, 8 June 2026.
