Hafidz Hernanda, the Social and Political Coordinator of the University of Indonesia (UI) Student Executive Board (BEM), was allegedly a victim of assault by unknown individuals in the Tebet area, South Jakarta.

The alleged assault went viral on social media, including a post by the Instagram account @gerpolemic.id. The post stated that the incident occurred on Sunday (4/10) at approximately 11:50 PM WIB.

“Based on circulating information, Hafidz is said to have experienced violence after being kicked, causing him to fall from his motorcycle. The perpetrators then allegedly struck Hafidz,” the post read.

The Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs at UI, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, confirmed the alleged assault.

Erwin stated that upon receiving the information, UI immediately communicated with the student involved, his family, and members of the BEM UI board to ensure his condition and address any necessary needs.

“UI is concerned about this incident and emphasises that all forms of violence against anyone are unjustifiable, including against UI students,” Erwin said in a written statement on Monday (5/10).

According to Erwin, UI’s current priority is to ensure the safety, treatment, and recovery of the student involved.

As part of the institution’s responsibility, Erwin noted that UI is providing assistance in three areas. First, medical assistance through to the recovery process. Second, assistance in the reporting and handling of the case with the police. Third, legal consultation assistance to ensure the student’s rights are protected throughout the process.

Erwin added that UI is entrusting the investigation of the facts of this incident to law enforcement and will continue to monitor the process. UI hopes the process will be swift, professional, and thorough, so that the facts of the incident can be clearly revealed.

“UI is committed to maintaining a sense of security for the entire academic community in conducting both academic and student activities, including the expression of opinions,” he said.
