UI Regrets Its Student Scribbling on a Policewoman’s Turban During Demonstration at Mabes Polri
Universitas Indonesia (UI) has condemned the actions of a student who scribbled on the clothing of a policewoman during the BEM UI demonstration at Mabes Polri. UI has conducted internal clarifications and the student has apologised.
“UI regrets certain on-field incidents that were not part of the plan. In a video circulating on 28 February 2026, it was found that an individual who is not a UI student wore UI alumni attire and behaved inappropriately towards police officers. In addition, there were actions of scribbling on the clothing worn by a policewoman (polwan) by a student during the protest,” UI said in a statement on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
The university has conducted internal clarifications and summoned the person involved. It will provide guidance/discipline to the person involved.
“Regarding the incident, the university conducted a full internal clarification by summoning involved parties to obtain a complete, balanced information. The process was conducted objectively and with a focus on rehabilitation, to ascertain the true facts and determine the next steps in accordance with the regulations applicable at the University of Indonesia.
Based on the clarification, the student involved was identified with the initials MRM. MRM admitted her mistake. The student also issued an apology.
“With full awareness I wish to apologise to T, the policewoman who was affected by my actions during the demonstration. I realise that such conduct was inappropriate and not in line with the ethical values and the spirit of mutual respect that should be upheld by Universitas Indonesia (UI),” MRM said.
MRM said the incident was a learning experience for her. She admitted to regretting her actions.
“This event provides an important learning opportunity for me to be wiser in how I express my opinions in public spaces. I offer sincere remorse and commit to participating in the rehabilitation process established by Universitas Indonesia with full responsibility,” further MRM.
Earlier, UI’s BEM Universitas Indonesia held a protest in front of the Headquarters of the Indonesian National Police on Friday, 27 February 2026. In circulating video, there is a female student who scribbled on the turban of a polwan during the protest.
