UI Public Health Students Equip Junior High School Pupils with Firefighting Skills

Thin smoke drifted across the courtyard of SMP Negeri 107 Jakarta. With hands still visibly nervous, a student directed a portable fire extinguisher (APAR) towards a flame in front of them.

Several classmates watched with enthusiasm, while an instructor provided guidance from the side. Not far from there, another group of students took turns performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a manikin, learning how to save lives during the critical first moments of an emergency.

Such a scene might not be a common sight in a junior high school environment. However, it was there that students were not merely learning about safety, but experiencing it firsthand.

This experience was part of K3KITA 2.0, a community service programme initiated by the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) department of the Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia (FKM UI), held at SMP Negeri 107 Jakarta on 17–18 June 2026.

The programme was funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Community Partnership Empowerment scheme and received support from the Directorate of Community Service and Social Innovation at the University of Indonesia.

Through this programme, the UI academic community aims to strengthen the culture of safety within educational environments from an early age.

K3KITA 2.0 was led by UI Occupational Health and Safety lecturer Abdul Kadir and carried out alongside five students from the Occupational Health and Safety study programme, one student from the Public Health study programme, and three student volunteers from the Occupational Health and Safety study programme. The programme was also supported by lecturer Rahmi from the University of Indonesia and Bangga Agung Satrya from Esa Unggul University.
