UI Public Health Faculty student wins third best oral presentation at NSCE 2026
Widya Inayah, a Master of Epidemiology student at the Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia (FKM UI), with a specialisation in the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), has won the 3rd Best Oral Presentation award at the 13th National Scientific Conference on Epidemiology (NSCE) 2026.
The award was achieved through a research presentation titled “Individual and Contextual Factors Associated with Measles Incidence in DKI Jakarta 2021–2025: A Multilevel Analysis” at the conference held on 4–7 August 2026 in Jakarta.
“The risk of measles is not only determined by individual characteristics, but also by the environment in which the individual lives,” said Widya in Depok on Wednesday.
According to Widya, the findings demonstrate the importance of considering regional conditions in measles prevention and control efforts. Such an approach can help identify areas that require greater attention, based on environmental conditions and the characteristics of their communities.
In her research, Widya used routine measles surveillance data for DKI Jakarta for the 2021–2025 period, combined with a number of contextual data sets, such as Measles Containing Vaccine (MCV)1 and MCV2 immunisation coverage, vitamin A coverage, population density, and settlement classification based on Governor Regulation Number 33 of 2024. The data were then analysed using a multilevel approach at the individual, RW (neighbourhood unit) and kelurahan (urban village) levels.
The results showed that measles risk is not only related to individual characteristics, but also to the environmental conditions of the place of residence.
Individuals with the same characteristics can have different levels of risk when living in areas with different immunisation conditions, population density and settlement characteristics.
Widya’s achievement aligns with the theme of NSCE 2026, namely “Future Epidemiology: Accelerating Multi-Source Surveillance and Synergizing One Health for Global Health Resilience”, which highlights the importance of strengthening surveillance through the use of multiple data sources and the One Health approach in addressing public health challenges.
The Dean of FKM UI, Prof. Indri Hapsari Susilowati, expressed appreciation for Widya’s achievement.
According to her, the achievement demonstrates the ability of FKM UI students to bring research findings relevant to public health issues to a national scientific forum.
“Widya’s achievement shows that FKM UI students are capable of producing research that stems from real problems in society while communicating the results through scientific forums. This accomplishment is a source of pride and demonstrates the students’ ability to think critically and produce scientific evidence relevant to public health,” said Prof. Indri.
She added that research examining the relationship between individual factors and environmental conditions is an important part of the development of epidemiology and the formulation of public health interventions.
“Epidemiology does not only look at who is at risk, but also needs to understand the environmental context that can influence that risk. Research such as that conducted by Widya can provide a more comprehensive picture in supporting disease prevention and control efforts,” said Prof. Indri.
