UI Prepares Sanctions for Sexual Harassment Case in FH Student Chat Group, Including Expulsion
Universitas Indonesia (UI) is conducting an investigation into the alleged verbal sexual harassment involving more than a dozen students within the Faculty of Law environment. The campus authorities have stressed that sexual violence in verbal form represents a serious violation.
“UI asserts that every form of sexual violence, including verbal forms occurring in digital or offline interactions, constitutes a serious violation of the university’s core values, the academic community’s code of ethics, and applicable legal regulations,” said Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs Erwin Agustian Panigoro at the UI Depok campus, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
Erwin explained that the investigation process is currently underway through UI’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS) with a victim-centred approach, upholding principles of justice, confidentiality, and caution. He stated that this process includes verifying reports, summoning parties involved, gathering evidence, and coordinating with relevant units at the faculty and university levels.
Meanwhile, FHUI has taken initial steps including internal tracing and summoning suspected students. The FHUI Student Representative Council has imposed organisational sanctions by revoking active membership status for several students, as outlined in Decree Number 007/SK/BPMFHUI/IV/2026.
Erwin described these steps as an initial response at the student organisation level. He affirmed that if violations are proven during the investigation, the university will impose sanctions in accordance with applicable provisions, including academic sanctions up to dismissal as a student, and will not rule out coordination with law enforcement authorities if criminal elements are identified.
UI ensures that the entire handling process is conducted professionally, independently, and free from interference or conflicts of interest. Erwin said UI provides accompaniment to victims in psychological, legal, and academic aspects to ensure comprehensive recovery, as well as full protection of the victims’ identity confidentiality.
The authorities urge all parties to act wisely by not disseminating unverified information. This includes respecting the ongoing handling process to maintain the integrity of the process and protect all involved parties.
UI reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the prevention and handling of sexual violence through firmer policies, ongoing education, and a responsive system that is victim-centred, to ensure a safe and just campus environment.
Erwin stated that developments in the case handling will be communicated periodically and transparently in line with the process, while maintaining confidentiality and protection for all involved parties.
16 Perpetrators Apologise
Chair of the FH UI Student Executive Board Anandaku Dimas Rumi Chattaristo said the perpetrators were gathered in a forum held at the DH UI Auditorium last night. The forum was organised to accommodate victims who wished to receive direct apologies from the perpetrators.
“Last night, a forum was indeed held at the DH UI Auditorium to accommodate victims who wanted to receive direct apologies from the perpetrators,” Dimas told reporters on Tuesday (14/4/2026).
Dimas said there were 16 perpetrators present last night. He noted that the victims were disappointed and annoyed by the alleged harassment in the group.
“There were sixteen perpetrators present last night. Regarding the victims’ response, I cannot represent all their feelings and I respect what they feel, but certainly disappointment and annoyance must encompass those who became victims,” he said.
Dimas emphasised that an apology alone is not sufficient. He stated that firm sanctions favouring the victims are needed in this case.
“However, it must be reiterated that an apology alone will not be enough; firm sanctions that side with the victims are needed in this case,” he said.
