The University of Indonesia (UI) has expressed its deep condolences over the death of Dr. Muhammad Zulfikar Drakel, 25, who was found deceased in a guest house room in Central Metro District, Metro City, Lampung. UI Director of Public Relations, Media, Government and International Affairs, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, confirmed the news on Thursday (23/7/2026).

Zulfikar was a graduate of the UI Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate and professional doctor programmes. Since February 2026, he had been undergoing the Indonesian Doctor Internship Programme in Lampung. “The University of Indonesia extends its deepest sympathies and shares in the grief with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. May the family be given fortitude,” Panigoro stated.

UI has established communication with the family and is coordinating with the Faculty of Medicine and other relevant parties to provide necessary support. The university emphasised that the cause of death is currently under investigation by the police. “The University of Indonesia fully respects this process and urges all parties to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information, and to respect the privacy and dignity of the deceased’s family,” he added.

Panigoro further noted that UI is committed to the welfare of its graduates and supports the creation of a safe, healthy, and supportive educational and healthcare environment. The university is also providing psychological support services for academics and colleagues affected by the incident.

Zulfikar was found lifeless on Tuesday evening (21/7) at the Sakinah guest house. A colleague, unable to reach him by phone or message, went to the lodging and asked the keeper, Hendri, to check the room. After knocking repeatedly with no response, they entered and found the victim collapsed in the bathroom. The incident was immediately reported to the Metro Police, whose Criminal Investigation Unit and Inafis team processed the crime scene. The body was evacuated to Ahmad Yani Regional General Hospital in Metro City for further examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police have confirmed the matter remains under investigation and have asked the public to await official results.
