UI Law Faculty Steps In to Investigate Allegations of Student Group Discussing Harassment
The Faculty of Law at Universitas Indonesia (FH UI) is currently investigating an issue regarding allegations that students created a group containing conversations with elements of sexual harassment. Screenshots of the conversations in that chat group are currently viral on social media. The conversations contain verbal harassment and objectification of women. Through a post on X, the Dean of FH UI stated that the faculty has received reports regarding alleged violations of the code of ethics that also potentially contain criminal elements, related to the activities of some students. Based on those reports, FH UI stated that it is aware of the circulating screenshots of conversations allegedly involving students and containing inappropriate content, including indications of sexual violence. “The faculty strongly condemns all forms of behaviour that degrade human dignity and contradict legal and academic ethical values,” stated the Dean of FH UI in that post. FH UI is currently conducting a serious, careful, and thorough investigation and verification. This process is carried out while upholding the principles of prudence and justice. “If violations are found, including those that potentially violate criminal law, the faculty will take firm steps in accordance with applicable provisions and coordinate with the relevant authorities,” he said. Furthermore, FH UI emphasises that the safety and comfort of the entire academic community is the top priority. FH UI also provides safe reporting channels as well as necessary support for those who need it. “For that purpose, you can contact the Faculty’s Student and Alumni Manager as the point of contact. We invite all parties to exercise restraint, not to disseminate unverified information, and to respect the ongoing process,” he said.
