UI Law Faculty Sexual Violence Case: Komnas Perempuan Highlights Guarantees for Victims' Recovery

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has called for the approach to the sexual violence case involving 16 students from the Faculty of Law (FH) at the University of Indonesia (UI) to focus on the victims.

“A victim-centred approach must be the primary principle, ensuring that the victims’ needs, comfort, and safety are met,” said Komnas Perempuan member Devi Rahayu in her statement on Wednesday (15/4/2026).

Devi stated that it is important for the handling not to focus solely on sanctions against the perpetrators, but to guarantee the victims’ psychological, social, and academic recovery.

She also said that this case should serve as a momentum to strengthen the campus’s commitment to being a safe, equal space free from gender-based violence.

Komnas Perempuan also emphasised the importance of preventive efforts through building a culture of equality in the campus environment and eradicating norms that perpetuate gender-based violence.

“Only in this way can the campus truly become a safe, equal learning space free from violence against women,” Devi Rahayu concluded.

The alleged harassment went viral on social media in the form of conversations pointing towards sexual matters in a social media group.

The Chair of the Faculty of Law UI Student Executive Board (BEM), Anandaku Dimas Rumi Chattaristo, said that all the perpetrators are students from the 2023 batch.

“The Faculty strongly condemns all forms of behaviour that degrade human dignity and contradict the values of law and academic ethics,” read the statement from the Faculty of Law UI posted on its Instagram.

The handling of this case is being carried out by the University of Indonesia’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS) with a victim-perspective approach.

The UI Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Relations, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, said that the current handling process includes verification of reports, summoning of parties, evidence collection, and coordination with related units at the faculty and university levels.

If violations are proven during the investigation process, the university will impose sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations.

“Including academic sanctions up to dismissal as a student,” Erwin said.

“And it does not rule out further coordination with law enforcement authorities if criminal elements are found,” he added.
