Depok — The University of Indonesia’s GreenMetric World University Rankings and the Ministry of Environment are exploring the development of a transparent and credible corporate sustainability ranking system in Indonesia.

“The collaboration with the Ministry of Environment is a strategic step expected to encourage companies in Indonesia not only to meet environmental compliance standards, but also to move towards more advanced and globally competitive sustainability practices,” said Dr Vishnu Juwono, Head of UI GreenMetric, in Depok on Monday.

He noted that the extensive experience of the Corporate Environmental Performance Rating Assessment Programme (PROPER) can serve as an important reference in developing a more comprehensive and data-driven corporate sustainability assessment system.

According to Juwono, a strong ranking system can help companies better understand environmental risks and climate change, whilst simultaneously improving competitiveness in a global economy increasingly oriented towards low-carbon development.

The programme monitors corporate environmental performance across various sectors through transparent and measurable indicators, which are then published to the public in the form of corporate environmental performance rankings.

Dr Rasio Ridho Sani, Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage Prevention at the Ministry of Environment, stated that PROPER has been an important government instrument in promoting transparency and improving corporate environmental performance.

“The PROPER programme is designed to enhance transparency and accountability of corporate environmental performance. We welcome the collaboration with UI GreenMetric to expand the use of data-driven approaches in encouraging companies to improve their environmental performance sustainably,” said Rasio.

He added that synergy between government, higher education institutions, and the business sector is crucial in strengthening environmental governance and accelerating the transition towards a green economy.

Through this collaboration, UI GreenMetric hopes to contribute to strengthening transparent corporate sustainability practices whilst supporting Indonesian companies in addressing climate change challenges and increasingly demanding global economic requirements for sustainability.
