Depok (ANTARA) - The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia (FKUI) is continuing to develop research that could offer a solution for treating diabetic foot wounds, using collagen to speed up the healing process.

Dr Meiliati Aminyoto, a lecturer at FKUI, said in Depok on Thursday that the research found collagen supplementation has the potential to help accelerate the healing of diabetic foot ulcers as an adjunct therapy to standard treatment.

Meiliati studied the benefits of collagen in supporting the wound healing process in diabetic patients.

The study involved 69 patients with diabetic foot ulcers. The results showed that patients who consumed 10 grams of hydrolysed collagen every day for 21 days experienced better wound healing compared to patients who received only standard therapy.

Collagen administration also increased serum albumin levels, a protein that plays a role in the formation of new tissue, and showed a tendency towards reduced inflammatory processes that support wound healing.

“Collagen is easily absorbed by the body and rich in amino acids for repairing damaged tissue. In addition to helping the formation of new tissue, collagen creates better conditions for the wound healing process. Because the raw material is relatively easy to obtain, this type of protein has the potential to be developed as a more affordable adjunct therapy,” she said.

Although further research on a wider population is still needed to confirm its long-term benefits, the results of this study represent a promising first step in developing more effective, safe and accessible therapies for people with diabetes.

The Deputy Dean for Resources, Venture and General Administration at FKUI, Prof Neng Tine Kartinah, expressed her appreciation for Dr Meiliati’s academic achievement.

She noted that the research makes an important contribution to the development of clinical nutrition science and healthcare services.

The findings on the benefits of collagen as an adjunct therapy open up opportunities for developing more effective, safe and affordable treatment for diabetic patients.

“I hope this research continues to be developed so that it can bring wider benefits to improving the quality of healthcare services and the quality of life of patients in Indonesia,” said Prof Neng Tine.
