UI Evaluates Student Media After LGBT-Themed Pride Month Post Sparks Controversy
The controversy surrounding Pride Month-themed posts by Suara Mahasiswa (SUMA) UI has led to long-lasting repercussions. Universitas Indonesia (UI) is now conducting an internal evaluation, while alumni of SUMA UI have openly expressed regret regarding the content that recently went viral.
Regarding the dynamics developing from the social media posts by the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Suara Mahasiswa (SUMA) UI concerning Pride Month issues, sexual orientation, and gender identity, Universitas Indonesia emphasises that the content was purely an editorial view of the student organisation involved. The content does not reflect the official stance of Universitas Indonesia or the UI academic community as a whole, stated UI’s Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, on Sunday (14/6/2026).
UI maintains its respect for freedom of expression as part of a democratic academic life. This freedom provides space for students to convey ideas and views critically and responsibly. As a higher education institution, UI states that it adheres to the values of Pancasila, national laws, and the prevailing norms in Indonesia.
UI also upholds integrity, respect for human dignity, and the creation of a safe, orderly, and conducive academic environment. These values serve as the foundation for UI in carrying out its Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the Three Pillars of Higher Education).
“In this spirit, UI views the campus as a space for dialogue and the development of knowledge that is open to various views. However, every opinion must be conveyed politely, non-provocatively, and in accordance with academic ethics,” the UI statement read.
According to UI, freedom of expression must always be accompanied by social responsibility to avoid triggering polarisation or division within society.
“Following up on the dynamics and unrest arising in society regarding the post, UI leadership is currently conducting a review and further evaluation steps internally. This process is being carried as part of a collaboration with relevant campus authorities to ensure that all student activities remain aligned with the Code of Ethics and Student Discipline Regulations of UI, and are guided by the corridor of responsible academic freedom,” UI asserted.
UI invites the entire academic community and the wider public to respect one another and maintain unity. According to UI, a healthy campus climate is built through constructive expression and respect for the noble values of community, national, and state life.
Amidst the university’s evaluation, SUMA UI alumni also expressed objections to the post that triggered the controversy.
“Alumni of the Suara Mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia (SUMA UI) Press regret the posts on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) by Suara Mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia (SUMA UI) titled ‘Testing the Principle of Humanity in the Month of Pride’. SUMA UI alumni have attempted to provide input to the SUMA UI Editorial Board to consider the social and community context while maintaining editorial independence in performing journalistic work,” stated the SUMA UI alumni via their social media account, @ilunisumaui, on Sunday (14/6/2026).
The alumni explained that since its establishment in 1992, SUMA UI has been known as a student activity unit that maintains diversity and serves as a space for expression for various groups with a moderate and non-partisan stance.
In its editorial journey, SUMA UI is said to have always prioritised balanced journalistic standards without favouring any specific group.
“SUMA UI alumni hereby express their objection to and regret the post, which is deemed inconsistent with the spirit of student press organisations to not lean towards any particular group,” the alumni stated firmly.
The alumni also regretted the attitude of the SUMA UI editorial board, which was deemed to have not provided space for dialogue and input regarding the post. They assessed that the post caused unrest among the UI academic community, UI alumni, and the wider public, and had a negative impact on the UI student movement.
SUMA UI alumni emphasised their commitment to upholding responsible freedom of opinion, taking into account the ethics and morals upheld by Indonesian society.
“SUMA UI alumni will continue to seek dialogue with the SUMA UI Editorial Board. We hope this incident does not happen again,” the alumni concluded.
The controversy began with a SUMA UI post titled “Testing the Principle of Humanity in the Month of Pride” which went viral on social media. The post featured an illustration of the Garuda Pancasila silhouette against a rainbow flag background.
In a caption titled “Pride Month”, SUMA UI wrote about the Anniversary of Pancasila, which it claimed is still accompanied by oppression against the LGBTIQ+ community.
Recently, the post was deleted from the Instagram feeds and X accounts of SUMA UI.
