UI Evaluates Student Media After LGBT-Themed Pride Month Post Sparks Controversy

The controversy over a Pride Month-themed post uploaded by Suara Mahasiswa (SUMA) UI has escalated, prompting the University of Indonesia (UI) to conduct an internal evaluation while SUMA UI alumni have openly expressed regret over the viral content. “Regarding the dynamics arising from the social media upload by the Student Activity Unit (UKM) Suara Mahasiswa (SUMA) UI concerning the issue of Pride Month as well as sexual orientation and gender identity, the University of Indonesia emphasises that the content of the upload is purely the editorial view of the student organisation concerned. The content does not reflect the official stance of the University of Indonesia or the entire UI academic community,” stated an official release from UI delivered by Director of Public Relations, Media, Government and International Affairs Erwin Agustian Panigoro, quoted on Sunday (14/6/2026). UI affirmed that it continues to respect freedom of expression as part of a democratic academic life. This freedom provides space for students to convey ideas and views critically and responsibly. As a higher education institution, UI stated it remains guided by the values of Pancasila, statutory regulations, and prevailing norms in Indonesia. UI also upholds integrity, respect for human dignity, and the creation of a safe, orderly, and conducive academic environment. These values form the foundation for UI in carrying out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. “In this spirit, UI views the campus as a space for dialogue and scientific development that is open to various views. However, every opinion must be conveyed politely, not provocatively, and in accordance with academic ethics,” the UI statement read. According to UI, freedom of expression must always be accompanied by social responsibility so as not to trigger polarisation or division within society. “Following up on the dynamics and public unease arising from the upload, UI leadership is currently conducting a review and further internal evaluation steps. This process is being carried out together with relevant campus authorities to ensure that all student activities are always in line with the UI Student Code of Ethics and Disciplinary Regulations, and guided by the corridors of responsible academic freedom,” UI stressed. UI called on the entire academic community and the wider public to respect one another and maintain unity. According to UI, a healthy campus climate is built through the constructive delivery of aspirations and respect for noble values in social, national, and state life. Amid the campus evaluation, SUMA UI alumni also voiced objections to the controversial post. “Alumni of Pers Suara Mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia (SUMA UI) regret the upload on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) by Suara Mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia (SUMA UI) titled ‘Sila Kemanusiaan di Bulan Kebanggaan’ (The Principle of Humanity in Pride Month). SUMA UI alumni have tried to provide input to the SUMA UI Editorial Board to consider the social context while maintaining editorial independence in carrying out its journalistic work,” stated the SUMA UI alumni statement quoted from their social media account, @ilunisumaui, on Sunday (14/6/2026). The alumni explained that since its establishment in 1992, SUMA UI has been known as a student activity unit that safeguards diversity and serves as an expressive space for various groups with a moderate and nonpartisan stance. In its editorial journey, SUMA UI is said to have always prioritised balanced journalistic standards without favouring any particular group. “SUMA UI alumni hereby express objection and regret over the upload, which is deemed inconsistent with the spirit of a student press organisation not to lean towards any specific group,” the SUMA UI Alumni asserted. The alumni also regretted the attitude of the SUMA UI editorial board, which was considered not to have opened space for dialogue and input regarding the upload. They assessed that the upload caused unease among the UI academic community, UI alumni, and the wider public, and had a negative impact on the UI student movement. SUMA UI alumni affirmed they continue to uphold responsible freedom of expression by considering the ethics and morals upheld by Indonesian society. “SUMA UI alumni will continue to pursue dialogue efforts with the SUMA UI Editorial Board. May this incident not be repeated,” concluded the SUMA UI alumni. The controversy originated from a SUMA UI upload titled “Menguji Sila Kemanusiaan di Bulan Kebanggaan” (Testing the Principle of Humanity in Pride Month) which went viral on social media. The upload featured a silhouette illustration of the Garuda Pancasila against a rainbow flag background. In a caption themed “Pride Month”, the post discussed the Birth of Pancasila Day, which it claimed was still accompanied by oppression of the LGBTIQ+ community. The upload was later removed from SUMA UI’s Instagram feeds and X account.
