UI develops wireless home uroflowmetry system for urinary disorder assessment
The University of Indonesia (UI) has developed a wireless home uroflowmetry system with automatic drainage capabilities, a breakthrough that enables patients to conduct urinary disorder assessments at home in a more natural and comfortable manner.
The innovation is led by Professor Harrina Erlianti Rahardjo, a Professor in the Urology Department of UI’s Faculty of Medicine (FKUI), alongside a multidisciplinary research team comprising FKUI lecturers, RSUI, RSCM, FTUI staff, and national health equipment partner PT Danatek Indera Indonesia.
“This collaboration ensures the innovation does not remain at the research stage but is ready for widespread implementation in healthcare services,” said Harrina Erlianti Rahardjo in Depok, West Java, on Tuesday.
Conventional uroflowmetry is typically conducted once at a hospital, but results often fail to reflect daily urination patterns due to environmental factors and patient anxiety.
This technology offers several advantages, making it more practical and representative than conventional methods.
The system is designed wirelessly, eliminating cumbersome cables. The device also features automatic drainage capabilities to maintain hygiene and simplify urine waste disposal.
Furthermore, the technology enables longitudinal monitoring, allowing repeated checks over several days to provide data more aligned with daily urination patterns.
Professor Harrina emphasised that home uroflowmetry aims to conduct assessments in the patient’s natural environment, yielding more representative results.
This beneficial innovation has secured a patent from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property of the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights on 24 February 2026.
Looking ahead, the system has potential for further development through integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), automated urination pattern analysis, digital bladder diaries, and the creation of a smart toilet ecosystem to support precision urology.
