A doctor from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia (FKG UI), Dr Deviyanti Pratiwi, has developed an innovation using patchouli oil as an additional therapy for periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease. This research opens up opportunities for utilising Indonesia’s natural resources to support the development of more effective dental healthcare.

“Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. If not properly treated, this disease can lead to the destruction of supporting tooth tissues and even tooth loss,” Dr Deviyanti Pratiwi stated on Thursday.

Through her research, Dr Deviyanti utilises patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin Benth) processed using micro-scale technology to ensure it works more optimally on inflamed areas. This approach is designed to increase the effectiveness of the natural ingredient in helping to inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause gum disease.

The research results indicate that the developed formula is capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria associated with periodontal disease. Initial testing also showed results that support the further development of this formula as an adjunct therapy in the treatment of gum disease.

These findings demonstrate that patchouli oil has the potential for wider application within the field of dental health. In addition to supporting the development of more innovative therapies, this research highlights the opportunity to utilise Indonesia’s biodiversity as a source of value-added health materials.

The Dean of FKG UI, Professor Lisa Rinanda Amir, stated that this research demonstrates the contribution of FKG UI to developing scientific knowledge that benefits the community. Innovations based on natural ingredients such as this are expected to serve as a foundation for the development of additional therapies in dentistry, particularly in the management of periodontal disease.
