UI Contributes to International Anti-Impunity Forum in Beirut

Universitas Indonesia (UI) has made an academic contribution to an international forum on anti-impunity through the participation of Heru Susetyo, a Professor at the Faculty of Law. He attended the Conference of End Impunity International Coalition (EIIC) in Beirut, Lebanon. The conference brought together lawyers from various countries, including Spain, France, Tunisia, Malaysia, and Indonesia, as well as members of parliament, military and police officials, and civil society organisations from Lebanon. The forum discussed issues such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and international efforts to end impunity. As a speaker, Heru presented on international human rights law and international criminal law concerning the handling of perpetrators of gross human rights violations. He called for a show of solidarity with victims and refugees of such crimes and urged that perpetrators be held accountable before the law. Following the conference, UI explored potential cooperation with EIIC in France and the Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (CENTHRA) in Malaysia for studies and data collection related to gross human rights violations. The participation aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to supporting human rights enforcement and world peace, particularly as the country prepares to assume the Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2026. During his visit, Heru also conducted field research, interviewing victims and witnesses of war crimes and visiting several refugee camps in Beirut, including Mar Elias, Sabra Shatila, Haret Hreik, and Dahieh.
