UI Appreciates Mining Journalism Competition by ANTARA, MIND ID, and Antam
Depok (ANTARA) - Universitas Indonesia (UI) has expressed its appreciation for the organisation of a journalism writing competition focused on mining, held through a collaboration between LKBN ANTARA, MIND ID, and PT Antam.
“This is an excellent step as it can contribute to a much better future for the mining industry, one that utilises the environment optimally and responsibly, without harming the surrounding communities,” said Chairul Hudaya, Director of High-Impact Innovation and Research at UI, during the MediaMIND 2026 Socialisation at the UI Science Techno Park Building, Depok, on Friday.
Chairul stated that involving journalists is crucial for conveying information regarding mining to the public in a more easily understandable language, including addressing the expectations of the community, the government, and corporations.
“The journalistic writing style is indeed necessary when discussing mining issues, as it is more accessible to the public,” he said.
According to him, communication between the government and the community can sometimes encounter obstacles because information delivered with good intentions may not be well-received if the methods or language used are inappropriate.
“The public requires explanations in language that is easier to comprehend,” he added.
Chairul noted that the public needs to receive explanations regarding the benefits of mining for national development, including the sector’s contributions and efforts towards community empowerment in mining areas.
He also emphasised that mining activities can serve as a source of state revenue to support development, provided that principles of responsibility towards the environment and society are maintained.
The MediaMIND 2026 Socialisation was also attended by the Head of Corporate Communications at MIND ID, Pratiwa Dyatmika; Corporate Secretary of PT Antam (Persero) Tbk, Wisnu Danandi Haryanto; and the Head of the Jakarta Support Bureau of LKBN ANTARA, Syarif Abdullah.
During the event, ANTARA representative Abdillah explained that the journalism competition carries the theme “From the Earth for National Sovereignty.”
The competition features five sub-themes: economy and investment, ESG and green mining, downstreaming, industrialisation and Indonesia’s mineral resilience, social contribution to the community, and transformation and innovation.
The ESG and green mining sub-theme focuses on responsible mining practices, the use of clean energy, and various sustainability initiatives to preserve the environment.
Meanwhile, the sub-theme of downstreaming, industrialisation, and Indonesia’s mineral resilience focuses on strengthening the mineral supply chain to create added value and bolster the position of Indonesia’s mineral industry on a global scale.
The social contribution sub-theme highlights the presence of the MIND ID Group within the community through the empowerment of fostered MSMEs, equal access to education, and healthcare services, including in remote areas.
Submission of journalistic works will take place from 1 August to 17 September 2026.
The pre-selection phase is scheduled from 18 September to 6 October 2026, followed by the announcement of 50 finalists on 7 October 2026.
Subsequently, finalists will participate in a site visit briefing on 8 October, a mentoring session from 9 to 19 October, and field visits on 20 to 21 October 2026.
The announcement of the final works is scheduled for November 2026, while the judging process by the jury will take place from November to December 2026.
