Professor Retno Sunarminingsih, a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has passed away. Her remains were interred today after being laid in state at UGM’s Balairung in Sleman.

The sad news was announced on UGM’s official website. Professor Retno reportedly died on Monday (29/6) in Jakarta at the age of 74.

The remains of the wife of former Minister of National Education, Prof Bambang Sudibyo, were laid in state at UGM and buried at the UGM Family Cemetery Complex in Sawitsari on Tuesday (30/6/2026).

UGM Rector, Prof Ova Emilia, remembered the deceased as a compassionate and honest figure in education. “She always hoped that the contents of the empty glass would be meaningful, enlightening, and full of guidance,” she said.

“We are all grateful to have had the opportunity to know and engage dynamically with Prof. Retno in various activities, and we also express our gratitude because she became a role model for the UGM academic community. All her charitable knowledge and works, God willing, will become a field of worship and pave the way for the development of future science,” she added.

It is known that Prof Retno once served as Vice-Rector for Research and Community Service (2002-2007 period) and Senior Vice-Rector for Education, Research, and Community Service (2007-2012 period). She also previously served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
