UGM Investigates Lewd Conversations in Engineering Students' Chat Group
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is currently investigating lewd conversations within a chat group for students of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) that involve sexual harassment against female students. UGM has also stated that it will impose sanctions on the perpetrators.
“UGM is taking careful and cautious steps to investigate this case of Online Gender-Based Violence (KBGO),” said UGM spokesperson, Dr I Made Andi Arsana, via text message on Monday (28/09/2026).
“The Faculty of Engineering has issued a statement of position. Coordination with relevant parties is being carried out effectively to ensure the appropriate steps are taken. We will provide updates at the earliest opportunity,” added Made.
Viral on Social Media
It is reported that screenshots from a student chat group within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTETI) at UGM’s Faculty of Engineering went viral on social media. The circulating screenshots reveal conversations that constitute sexual harassment against female students.
“Threads users, it is sad because the virality of the FH UI case changed nothing… turning women into sexual objects, how can they harass women so brazenly? It has happened again at UGM with different individuals. Please help boost this!” wrote the Threads account @hmart_lw, as cited by detikJogja on Monday (28/09/2026).
In the uploaded screenshots, conversations between several students were seen using sensitive language that degraded female body parts. The posts have since been deleted.
