Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has climbed 18 places in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2027. In the latest QS list released on 18 June, UGM is ranked 206th out of 1,504 higher education institutions. This ranking is an improvement from UGM’s position of 224th in the world last year. “This recognition reflects the strengthening of teaching quality, research productivity, and the scientific contributions of UGM’s academic community in the eyes of the international academic community,” said UGM Rector Ova Emilia in a written statement on Thursday, 18 June 2026. According to Ova, the improvement in UGM’s QS World University Rankings was driven by better performance across nearly all assessment indicators. One of the main drivers is UGM’s academic reputation, which ranks 131st in the world for the Academic Reputation indicator. With its global position of 206, UGM is second only to Universitas Indonesia (UI) among Indonesian higher education institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2027. UI is ranked 191st in the world this year. At the regional level, UGM is ranked 54th in Asia. Meanwhile, within Southeast Asia, the Yogyakarta-based university is ranked 9th. Ova Emilia stated that this ranking provides UGM with capital to attract talent and expand international cooperation. “This result reinforces UGM’s position as one of the leading universities in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, while affirming the institution’s commitment to continue advancing on the global higher education stage,” she said. According to the official QS website, there are five main indicators used to assess the quality of higher education. They are Research and Discovery with a 50 percent weighting, Employability and Outcomes at 20 percent, Learning Experience at 10 percent, Global Engagement at 15 percent, and Sustainability at 5 percent. For the QS World University Rankings 2027, Quacquarelli Symonds ranked 1,504 higher education institutions from various countries. Twenty Indonesian universities made the list.
