UBSI Rector Reveals Psychology Degree Increasingly in Demand, Career Opportunities and Prospects
Public awareness of the importance of mental health has continued to increase in recent years. Not only in educational settings, psychological issues are now a serious concern in the workplace, creative industries, corporations, and social institutions. This situation has led to a greater need for psychology graduates and opened up wider career opportunities.
Rector of Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI), Prof Dr Ir Mochamad Wahyudi, stated that psychology is a field of science with high relevance to the times because it focuses on humans as the centre of various social and professional activities. He added that as technology develops rapidly, the ability to understand humans becomes even more important.
“Companies need individuals who are able to understand consumer behaviour, manage human resources, build effective communication, and help create a healthy work environment. This is where the role of psychology becomes very strategic,” he said.
According to Prof Wahyudi, many people still think psychology is only related to the profession of psychologist or counsellor. In fact, the scope of psychology is much broader and can be applied in various sectors. Psychology is a field of study that examines human behaviour, thought processes, emotions, motivation, and social interactions that influence daily life. During their studies, students not only learn theory but are also trained to conduct observations, analyse behaviour, carry out scientific research, and understand individual and group dynamics.
“Psychology teaches students to understand how humans think, make decisions, interact, and adapt to their environment. These skills are highly needed in the increasingly complex and dynamic modern world of work,” he explained.
He added that one of the main advantages of psychology graduates is their career flexibility. Not limited to the mental health field, psychology graduates have opportunities to work in various industrial sectors. Some of the professions in demand by psychology graduates include Human Resource Development (HRD), education consultants, human resource trainers, counsellors, human behaviour researchers, consumer behaviour analysts, and organisational development specialists. Additionally, the development of the digital economy has opened new opportunities for psychology graduates to engage in marketing, user experience, content strategy, market research, and digital community development.
According to him, in the modern era, companies do not only need people who master technology. “They also need individuals who understand human behaviour, are able to communicate well, have empathy, and can work together in a team. These characteristics are closely related to the competencies learned in psychology,” he said.
During their education in psychology, students are also equipped with various skills that are currently in high demand in the job market. These include interpersonal communication skills, empathy, human behaviour analysis, observation, research, problem-solving, critical thinking, and the ability to understand group and organisational dynamics. According to Prof Wahyudi, these skills fall into the category of soft skills that are increasingly sought after by companies across various sectors.
“Many companies today are looking for talent who are not only academically intelligent but also able to communicate, adapt, and understand others. That is why psychology graduates have strong competitiveness in the professional world,” he said.
